The intercom opens the entrance, but the latch will not hold: how to tell the difference in Terrassa

A safe visual check for separating an electric door-release issue from mechanical misalignment at a shared entrance in Terrassa.

An intercom opening the door does not prove that the whole closing system works. The electric door release may operate correctly while the latch fails to stay engaged when the door leaf closes. Describe the two behaviours separately: what happens when the intercom is pressed, and what happens when the door closes. This avoids confusing an electrical fault with a mechanical issue.

Carry out a visual check only; do not dismantle or loosen parts. With the route clear and without pressing the button, watch whether the leaf reaches the frame smoothly and the latch aligns with the strike plate. If it rebounds, leaves a gap, or remains shut only when pushed, note whether contact is at the top, bottom, or along the full height. Also report rubbing, uneven clearance, or a symptom that changes when closing from inside. Do not put objects into the strike plate, use wedges, magnets, or lubricant as a test, or interfere with wiring, the electric release, or hinges.

The key point is when the fault occurs. If the button releases the door only when pressed but the latch does not engage when it closes, this points initially towards alignment of the leaf, frame, and strike plate. If the door remains released without the button being pressed, the electric release does not respond, or it is intermittent, report a possible electrical-system issue. Do not attempt to diagnose it or bypass the lock: a professional can assess the system once authorization is confirmed.

Establish who may approve work. At a shared entrance, this normally falls to the community through its property manager, chair, or another authorized representative. A tenant may report the fault but should not alter a common element. For a private door, authorization must come from the owner or an authorized representative. Terrassa City Council’s Special Heritage Plan identifies protected buildings and elements and says work on them must meet protection requirements. Seek guidance before changing visible or shared elements if the entrance may be affected.

Do not wedge the entrance open or leave it unlocked. Report the symptom, entrance, and any alternative route. In the event of fire, a trapped person, risk to physical safety, or another genuine emergency, call 112; the Government of Catalonia’s official 112 information describes it as a free, 24-hour emergency service, not for routine repairs.

If a shared entrance remains ajar, read the Mataró door-closer guide. For an authorized assessment, see the Terrassa locksmith service page. You may also call or use WhatsApp, stating the symptom and who authorizes the work.
