How to improve key control at a business without mistaking an internal repair for a visible or protected alteration.
Guide centreImproving key control at a business with a historic façade does not necessarily mean replacing the entire entrance. The first useful decision is to separate the access-management issue from the element that is visible from the street. If keys have been lost, the people with access have changed, or there is no record of copies, note how many keys remain active, who holds them, and which door each one opens. That information makes it possible to consider a proportionate solution without routinely changing the business’s exterior appearance.
Before requesting changes, make safe observations: check whether the key turns with the door closed and also with the leaf resting against the frame, without forcing it; note whether the latch enters normally and whether friction appears at the frame, handle, or cylinder. A stiff turn can relate to the cylinder, but it can also result from door misalignment. Do not spray products indiscriminately, file the strike plate, or remove visible fittings as a test. Keep master keys, cards, and codes out of any photographs you send.
A cylinder located within an assembly, a non-visible supplementary lock, or a documented process for key copies may be separate matters from the door leaf, pull handle, escutcheon, sign, or any fitting that forms part of the façade. The fact that a component looks small does not show that it may be freely replaced, nor that the whole entrance is protected. Sabadell City Council’s electronic municipal portal links to the PEPS and its documentation; any protection applying to a particular door must be checked in the relevant record. If the work would change the external appearance or there is uncertainty over listing, consult the City Council or Heritage Office first, giving the address, general photos without security information, and the proposed work.
Authority must also be clear. The owner or an expressly authorised person should approve changes to a private door; a tenant should check the lease and obtain written approval where applicable. For an entrance hall, shared garage, communal shutter, or any common element, notify the building manager, chair, or community representative before work takes place. Tell the locksmith the type of door, the symptoms, which parts are visible from the public way, the current key-control arrangements, and who authorises the work.
Do not wedge the entrance open or obstruct an exit. For a fire, an immediate risk to people, someone trapped, or a violent break-in in progress, contact 112 first. For another heritage-access scenario, see the Canet de Mar guide to historic doors. For an assessment locally, see the Sabadell locksmith service; you can also call or use WhatsApp, stating the authority for the work and whether a visible element may be affected.
